Weslaco ISD CTE Students Make an Impact at Local Business-Education Conference.

Several Weslaco ISD CTE Business Professionals of America (BPA) students from Weslaco East HS - BPA Chapter I & II participated at a local business and education conference at TSTC-Harlingen on Friday, September 15, 2017. The students served as student ambassadors at the conference. In addition to attending several informative sessions, students staffed the registration desk, and introduced the session speakers. The BPA students attended presentations by local business leaders as well as educational advocates including the Mexican American School Board Association (MASBA), Leadership Empowerment Group, Alliance for Excellent Education, and the McNeil Educational Foundation as well as the keynote speaker, former governor of West Virginia, Bob Wise. The students concluded the conference by attending the panel discussion at the conclusion of the conference. The conference helped the students understand the importance of a post-secondary education, and given statistical information regarding the local, state, and national graduation rates. In addition, students heard business leaders explain what industry wants from employers. Collaboration, problem solving, and soft skills were emphasized as business needs by several presenters. Weslaco East HS BPA Students attending the conference were: BPA Chapter I (Karla Jimenez, President; Eva Silva, Vice-President, Aliyah Abrigo, Secretary, Norberto Leija, Treasurer, and Natalie Venegas, Reporter) and BPA Chapter II (Rocio Limon, President; David Magana, Vice-President; Blass Garcia, Treasurer; David Magana, Reporter; and Kayla Martinez)
